Why, harro thar! Here we’re going to take a look at [HorribleSubs] release of Beelzebub episode 38–potentially concur this is one reason why to avoid failrips from simulcasts, preferably even avoid simulcasts themselves!

Maybe it’s just me. However, being as I started off in the fansubbing scene as a typesetter, I tend to get irritated by subtle issues such as the above. Why would you add a dialogue styled line for a title sign? They do not say “kyoudai genka… hajimemashita,” therefore it’s inappropriate to use the same exact styling as is used for dialogue texts (the actual subs).

Oh, look… wait, where's the subs?

Nandayo 「何だよ」 or what is heard here as simply 「だよ」could be translated as numerous things. However, as we can see from this screencap, it is not even translated. Period. Possible translations;

• The hell?
• Really?
• Sheesh.
• Geez.
• Come on.

• Blank. Figure it out on your own you non-Japanese speaking mother fucker.

「聞きたい事があるの」 kikitai koto ga aru no | Literal: to ask thing there is

This translation isn’t particularly wrong, however, “There is something I need to ask you.” would flow so much better here. What they have feels a little off. “I want to” opposed to “need to,” hmm… the way I’m understanding it, Kunieda isn’t asking so much as she is demanding an explanation. Such is seen shortly after this scene; Kunieda initiates the conversation with kotaete 「答えて」, which in this context comes off with a demanding demeanor; “Answer me.”

「その子いったい何者なの」 sono ko ittai nani mono nano | Literal: this child exactly what person

Aside from the obvious fail on behalf of the editor(s); if there are any, what the heck is with いったい being placed at the end of the sentence? Common sense would say, “Who exactly is that kid?” Based on elementary understanding of grammar, you would know that placing a comma in a sentence (such as seen above) equates to a pause. Therefore what we’re reading is, “Who is that kid.” (don’t hold your breath) *pause* “Exactly?” Pretty self explanatory why this edit, or perhaps the translator’s fault, was a bad choice.

「絶対普通 じゃない」 zettai futsuu janai | Literal: absolute normal not

Again with more editing/translation fail. Try, “That’s definitely not normal.”
絶対=/=うそだろう lrn2jap.

Simple; unless there are two or more individuals speaking at the same exact time, or have dialogue overlapping, you should never see more then one sentence at a time.

Timing fail; scene bleed

Albeit, this was the only scene bleed I noticed throughout the episode. Timing for the most part is pretty clean.

With that I’m going to go ahead and wrap this review up. Even though I’ve gone out of my way to point out some minor mistakes throughout the first five minutes of the show, the quality of this ripsub is nowhere near as bad as other groups; [names omitted] whom I’ll be reviewing here shortly.

If you’re looking for a show that either has no fansubs or has slow fansubs, I’d suggest grabbing ripsubs from [HorribleSubs]. Also, when having to choose between ripsubs, as of the time of this post, I’d strongly suggest going for [HorribleSubs].
